Abstract
Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavdeva established the Eka-Sarana-Nama-Dharma not merely as a spiritual movement, but as a radical socio-cultural restructuring of medieval Assam. Their primary institutional innovations—the decentralized Namghar (community prayer hall) and the centralized Satra (monastery)—were designed to dismantle rigid caste hierarchies through egalitarian participatory practice. In the contemporary scenario, these fifteenth-century structures transcend their religious origins to function as the vital fulcrum of Assam’s democratic and socio-political apparatus. This paper examines how the Namghar operates as a grassroots village parliament, facilitating localized dispute resolution, consensus-building, and resource management, effectively embedding democratic praxis at the micro-level. Concurrently, it analyzes the macro-political influence of the Satra network, which acts as the ultimate arbiter of Assamese cultural identity. As Assam navigates complex modern challenges—ranging from ethno-nationalism and shifting demographic anxieties to the ideological synthesis of regionalism with broader national political narratives—these traditional institutions serve as indispensable mobilization hubs. Political legitimacy in the Brahmaputra Valley is inextricably linked to the patronage, protection, and ideological alignment of these cultural bastions. Ultimately, this research argues that the egalitarian philosophy of Sankardeva and Madhavdeva remains a living, highly elastic political framework rather than a static historical artifact. By analyzing the intersection of traditional moral authority and modern statecraft, the paper demonstrates how the Namghar and Satra networks continue to actively negotiate, shape, and redefine the democratic ethos, voter behavior, and identity politics of twenty-first-century Assam.
